Before I heard the term user experience design, I caught the bug for it when taking a couple of web design courses from Aarron Walter while he was still teaching at the Art Institute of Atlanta. I had no idea who he was, and I don't think he had yet come to international acclaim.
Needless to say, he was a phenomenal teacher. He took our foundations in graphic design and showed us the fundamental principles that determined many of the rules that we either followed from exposure and raw talent, or learned by instruction. Little did I know that his two classes would put a fire in me to do good interaction design.
That was 14 years ago, but I still quote the things that he taught us, as well as the phrase "surprise and delight" from Designing for Emotion, to my teammates and clients.
